I ordered a limited edition hardcover of Oryx and Crake from the UK for a reading Margaret Atwood was having in San Francisco.
I've always wanted to catalog my books. Now that I moved, I figured I could start the process while unpacking (and partially for insurance purposes.) I was never really the kind of person that collected autographs. However that changed when I realized that writers like to promote their books and do readings and signings.
For the most part, 90% of the books I collect are from attending readings or meeting the author in person. I try to stick to the requirement of meeting the author in person before having a book signed. To me the autographed book is a memento of the time I spent with the author. Some books were gifts from friends and family.
